Garberville Rotary: Commitment to Community Service

Garberville Rotary is dedicated to the principles of Rotary International, fostering the ideal of service in every aspect of a Rotarian’s life—personal, business, and community. Our local projects embody our commitment to Environmental Protection, Urban Peace, Care for the Aging, AIDS Education, and Functional Literacy. Additionally, we undertake various Community Service Projects under the umbrella of International Service.

History of Local Community Service Committee Projects

1. Tooby Park
Ongoing Project

  • Past Contributions: Installed playground equipment, provided concrete-based picnic tables, offered financial support for garbage management and water testing.

  • Current Commitment: None at this time.

2. Town Clock
Ongoing Maintenance

  • Future Involvement: Installation of a thermometer.

3. Downtown Garbage Pickup
Joint Project with KMUD

  • Future Involvement: Continued maintenance.

4. Community Beautification Projects

  • South End Landscaping Project

  • Southern Humboldt Community Healthcare District (SHCHD)

    • Past Contributions: Provided parking lot curbs and paving, built a storage building.

    • Future Involvement: Ongoing maintenance.

5. Garberville Public Library Project (2000 - 2003)
Community Partner

  • Created a docent program to help patrons access the Internet.

  • Rotary members personally donated history books and videos.

6. Mattole Salmon Restoration Project
South Fork of Eel River

  • Past Involvement: Loaned tanks, pipes, equipment, and provided feed.

7. Women’s Shelter (WISH)

  • Past Support: Multiple donations, including rent assistance.

8. Community Cornerstone

  • Ongoing Support: Sponsored summer games and a barbecue.

  • Expansion Project (2002): Supported the building expansion.

9. Benbow Lake State Park

  • Past Contributions: Installed a par course, built a permanent stage and two storage buildings.

  • Hosted a dinner for Shakespearean actors from England.

10. Institute for Sustainable Forestry

  • Hosted a general meeting dinner at the Mateel Community Center.

11. Healy Senior Center

  • Past Contributions: Roof and room remodeling (2000-2001).

12. School Literacy Project
Now part of our Vocational Service

13. SHCHD Hospital Project (2001-2002)

  • Built a wheelchair ramp to the garden and installed handrails.

  • Secured a $1,000 Rotary International Foundation Grant.

14. Hospice Project (2002-2003)

  • Constructed sidewalks and a patio with wheelchair access; beautified the yard.

  • Received a $1,000 Rotary International Foundation Grant.

15. WISH Women’s Shelter (2003-2004)

  • Provided interior paint and window screens.

16. Monthly Book Purchases for the Garberville Library

  • Books donated in the name of the weekly speaker.
